Are you ready for your Next Shift?
The Next Shift Initiative, operated by the NAHL Officiating Department, supports, develops, and advances aspiring USA Hockey on-ice officials aged 18 and older. Designed for individuals committed to progressing in their officiating journey, the initiative provides a structured foundation through a blend of education, exposure, and experience - both virtually and in person.
About the In Person Program
The in-person development program component of Next Shift delivers a high-impact, hands-on experience featuring structured classroom education and on-ice training.
- EDUCATION - Classroom sessions focus on Three-Official System positioning and mechanics, face-off procedures, effective communication skills, and more
- EXPOSURE - Participants will interact with and learn from experienced Officiating Coaches with backgrounds spanning from youth and adult leagues to junior, collegiate, professional, and international levels
- EXPERIENCE - On-ice skill sessions provide fast-paced, practical training focused on edge control, stride efficiency, precise positioning, dynamic movement, and real-game application

Eligibility
- Space is limited. Selected participants will receive additional registration instructions
- Open to USA Hockey certified officials aged 18 or older with at least one year of experience
- Applicants under 18 or with less than one year of experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis
Cost
- If selected to participate in the program, a registration fee of $50.00 USD is due on or before August 8, 2025
- If full payment is not received by the August 8, 2025 deadline, a participant's invitation to attend the program will be withdrawn and their spot will be offered to an official on the Wait List
Refund Policy
- The registration fee is non-refundable. No refunds will be issued for any reason, including cancellations.
Application Process & Timeline
- The online application deadline is Friday, August 1, 2025 at 11:59 PM CT
- Applicants will be notified of their application results on or before August 4, 2025
