16U:
The Lake County Vipers pulled off an impressive comeback to beat the St. Louis Sting and maintain an undefeated record. After giving up the first two goals of the contest, the Vipers stormed back and scored three unanswered to win the game 3-2. The first tally of the game came shortly after the midpoint of the first period when Cayden Govero found Connor Casella in the slot who snapped it home for St. Louis. In the second period, Jack Scott picked up a rebound off a Michael Land shot from the point that extended the St. Louis lead to two. A few minutes later, Bennett Forman got the Vipers started and cut the lead in half after a low shot through traffic snuck past the goaltender. The first goal of the third period was an important one, and for the Vipers, it had to be in their favor. Thankfully for them, Drew Sager put on the moves and scored a stellar unassisted goal to even the score at two with 16:27 remaining. With time expiring and both teams in need of a hero, Aaron Krivopisk made an excellent defensive play at his own blue line to turn the play in favor of the Vipers that eventually led to Nathan Taormina burying a rebound and the game-winning goal. Response to adversity is a main component of evaluating good hockey teams versus great hockey teams. The Sting gave the Vipers a lot to worry about coming out of the mid-game Zamboni break, but they stayed strong in their game and kept their composure. Some great team hockey along with stellar individual efforts allowed the Vipers to comeback and stun the Sting.
14U:
Nest Hockey improved to 7-1 on the SHOW season, closing out the Blaine event with a 7-4 win over the Chicago Hawks. The matchup turned into a scoring frenzy, with three goals in the first period, four in the second, and four more in the third. Special teams were a major factor, accounting for five goals combined on the power play and while shorthanded, including two shorthanded tallies from Nest. The game-winner came from Easton Seelochan-Pavone, who capped off a three-point night in the victory.
