Day 1 complete in Marlborough
Day one of the second SHOW event in Marlborough has officially come to an end. There was plenty of action between the 14U, 16U and 18U levels and plenty of games to recap here from the New England Sports Center. Be sure to click HERE for the full slate of scores.
14U:
Team Wyoming started the event out on a high note as they defeated the Chicago Hawks by a score of 6-3. The Hawks were able to get on the board not once, but twice in two minutes before Hardty Huffman cut Chicago’s lead to one before the first period came to a close. Scoring picked up in the second frame as a total of four goals were scored, three of which belonged to Wyoming. Entering the final frame up 4-3, Wyoming knew the Hawks would up a fight but both Hardty Huffman and Raleigh Nields would tally their second goal of the night to seal the deal for their squad.
After coming up short during their first game, the San Diego Jr. Gulls were able to make adjustments and turn things around for their second game of the day as they defeated the SISU Thunderbirds by a score of 5-3. The first period was rather quiet as neither team was able to find the back of the net but things certainly got interesting as the Gulls scored three goals, all within six minutes of one another. The Thunderbirds would attempt a comeback scoring the first goal of the final frame, and would go on to net another two goals. Defenseman William Mellinger would prevent the comeback scoring a hat trick from the blue line to aid his team to victory.
16U:
The Santa Clarita Flyers squeaked away with 3-2 overtime victory over the Bishop Gorman Gaels, improving their SHOW season record to 5-0. Fans were kept on their edge of the seats as scoring went back and forth, a true nailbiter between the two teams. Both teams were able to notch one goal through the first frame as Jack Slaten (Santa Clarita) and Cash Tritten (Bishop Gorman) found the back of the net. Justin Yamamoto would go on to put the Flyers up 2-1 as the lone goal scorer during the second before Lucas Nervegna tied things up for the Gaels. Radek Tervo would score his fourth goal in the season to cap off their day one game in overtime as netminder Anthony Salazar stood tall between the pipes making 27 of 29 saves for his squad.
The Rose City Pats had a fantastic day, picking up a pair of wins over Team Wyoming and the Orland Park Vikings. During their 4-2 victory over Wyoming, Montrose, CA native Jayson Hurtado was the lone player to have a multi-point game, scoring the first and last goal of the contest. The Pats second game of the day seemed to be in their favor for the majority of the contest as they tallied the first three goals of the game, the first two goals being scored in the first two periods. Things would get very interesting in the final frame as Orland Park scored two quick goals with under two minutes remaining in regulation. Unable to complete the comeback, the game winning goal would eventually be off the stick of Rose City’s Trevor Godin, the team’s leading scorer in the goal category.
18U:
The West Dundee Leafs remain undefeated in SHOW play with a record of 5-0 after defeating the Texas Tigers by a score of 5-2. The Leafs opened up scoring 5:30 into the first period, the only goal during the first frame. After scoring one additional goal in the second period, West Dundee would have a 2-0 lead heading into the third. The Tigers would make things interesting, attempting a comeback as they were able to find the back of the net scoring two quick goals within the first minute of the period. Things would remain tied up for the next 10 minutes despite Texas going on the man advantage, a fantastic penalty kill for the Leafs. Nicholas DeGeorge would be the star for the winning squad scoring the fourth goal of the contest in addition to recording two assists as West Dundee would go on to score three times during the final frame to claim victory.
The Tri-Valley Bulls skated away to victory after defeating the St. Louis Sting by a final score of 3-1. Luke Brandon would tally the first goal of the contest and his first goal of the season to put his team up 1-0 after the first period. The Sting’s Rocco Tettamble would score his first goal of the season, tying things up heading into the final frame. The Bulls came out hot for the last period, scoring two unanswered goals to secure the win. It’s worth noting that Tri-Valley’s netminder in Gavin Arnold had an incredible game, posting a save percentage of .944, helping propel his team to victory between the pipes.
