The Kenai River Brown Bears of the North American Hockey League are pleased to announce that defenseman and NAPHL grad Rob McCollum has committed to play NCAA Division 1 hockey for Long Island University.
McCollum, 20, just completed his final season of junior hockey in 2019-20, which was spent between the United States and his native Canada during his career.
The 6’2/181 lbs. native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, appeared in 25 games during the 2019-20 season with the Brown Bears. McCollum recorded 13 points, which included three goals and 10 assists.
McCollum would also play part of the 2019-20 in the USHL for the Lincoln Stars and Muskegon Lumberjacks.
“We are extremely excited for Rob having earn this opportunity to continue his career at Long Island University. Rob was a very hard worker and helped provide leadership for our squad early in the season before heading to the USHL. He has a bright future ahead of him and we look forward to following his career as he becomes a part of the inaugural team at Long Island University,” said Brown Bears head coach Kevin Murdock.
McCollum made his NAHL debut at the beginning of the 2018-19 season with the Shreveport Mudbugs.
He spent two seasons playing for the Thunder Bay Kings 18U team in the NAPHL prior to playing junior hockey. In 44 career NAPHL games during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, McCollum recorded 13 points. He also played in the 2016 NAPHL Top Prospects Tournament in Edina, Minnesota.
