NAPHL 16U Recap: Days 1 and 2

November 12, 2017

Recap: Day 1 & 2 of the NAPHL Showcase in Troy, Michigan

This weekend kicked off the third PHL event of the season, lasting from November 10-13 at the Troy Sports Center in Troy, Michigan. This event will feature the 18U and 16U teams playing five games as they push towards the Dixon Cup Playoffs.

Shutout City

The showcase started out with outstanding goaltending in the 16U Division, with nine teams shutting out their opponent in the first two days of play. Chase Tawater of the Dallas Blackhawks Elite registered two shutouts in two games with a total of 45 saves in two gams. Teams that blocked all shots on net were the Washington Little Capitals, Arizona Bobcats, Dallas Blackhawks Elite, Madison Capitols, Rocky Mountain RoughRiders, Esmark Stars, Thunder Bay Kings, Meijer AAA, and the Sioux Falls Jr. Stampede.

Bonus Hockey

The first two days of the tournament saw a lot of bonus hockey with four games in two days ending in either overtime or a shootout. On day one, the Valley Forge Minutemen defeated the Washington Little Capitals 3-2 in the shootout with Jake Spina netting the game-winning goal. On day two, the Madison Capitols defeated the Arizona Bobcats 2-1 in overtime. The game-winning goal came from Kaleb Kohn, his second GWG of the season. The Colorado Springs Tigers fell to Elite Hockey 2-1 in overtime with Declan Martin scoring the game winner. Lastly, CarShield AAA defeated the New Jersey Jr. Titans 6-5 in overtime, with the game-winning goal coming from Cam Nowak, his second of the season.

Staying Undefeated

After the first two days of play, the Rocky Mountain RoughRiders remain the only undefeated team in the PHL 16U. The RoughRiders boast a 7-0-0 record and look to stay hot when they take on the Washington Little Capitals and the Dallas Blackhawks Elite in day three and four of the tournament. The RoughRiders defeated both the Thunder Bay Kings(3-2) and Meijer AAA(2-0) on Friday. Rocky Mountain handed the Everett Silvertips Elite their first loss of the season on Saturday in a 3-1 win.
