Scouts defenseman Salem makes NCAA D1 commitment

June 9, 2020

Luc Salem, who played in the NAPHL prior to playing in the NAHL, played in the 2020 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament.

The Kansas City Scouts (formerly the Topeka Pilots) of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that defenseman and NAPHL grad Luc Salem has committed to play NCAA Division 1 hockey for St. Lawrence University in the ECAC.

Salem, 20, just completed his second and final season playing junior hockey in the NAHL. The 5’10/174 lbs. native of Santa Monica, California ended the 2019-20 season with 36 points (9 goals, 27 assists) in 52 games played. Salem, 20, ranked fourth among defensemen in the league in assists and tied for 5th in total points.

Salem was named the NAHL’s Defenseman of the Month in December as he posted nine points in eight games during the month. That included three goals, six assists and a +6 rating. Salem also represented the South Division at the 2020 Top Prospects Tournament in Attleboro, Massachusetts in February.

“I am proud to announce my commitment to play Division 1 college hockey and further my education at St. Lawrence University. I want to thank all my former coaches, teammates, billets, and most importantly my family for their support,” stated Salem on Twitter.

Salem made his NAHL debut during the 2018-19 season with the Maryland Black Bears, appearing in 52 games where he recorded 2 goals and 19 assists. Overall in his NAHL career, Salem has appeared in 108 career games and recorded 57 points.

Salem is a NAPHL Ladder of Development product, having played the 2015-16 season with the California Titans 16U team, where he posted 18 points in 25 games played that season.

“Luc is an intelligent young man and hockey player. We are ecstatic for him to commit to St. Lawrence University. He will be a nice addition to their program. We wish him the best of luck on the ice and in the classroom,” stated Scouts Head Coach Simon Watson. “Luc was a steady point producer for us all season long.  His mobility and poise with the puck contributed to our success offensively. He was counted on in all situations and his confidence soared and he enjoyed a breakthrough season.”
