Meijer AAA 18U forward Hamel signs NAHL tender

November 7, 2018
The Meijer AAA hockey organization of the NAPHL are pleased to announce that 18U forward Aaron Hamel has signed a North American Hockey League (NAHL) tender agreement with the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Knights in the NAHL’s East Division.

A native of Okemos, Michigan, Hamel is currently 2nd in team scoring for the 18U Meijer team with six points in his first eight NAPHL games. Meijer is currently in 1st place in the NAPHL’s 18U High Performance Division with a 7-1-0 record. The 17-year-old spent a weekend with the Knights during their three-game stretch against the Northeast Generals back in October, skating in his NAHL debut on October 12th.

“Back a couple of weeks ago when I came up against Northeast, I met a lot of the boys and the coaches and they were great to me,” said Hamel. “Even just being called up for a week, I think the coaches taught me some new things that I brought back to Meijer.”

Hamel spent the 2017-18 season in the NAPHL with both the 18U and 16U teams for Meijer, scoring 25 goals and 53 points. While the forward stands in at 5’9/145 lbs., Hamel believes there is a lot he can bring to Wilkes-Barre, including a physical brand of hockey.

“I feel like I can make plays to get scoring opportunities and score a few goals myself,” said Hamel. “I also have a gritty tenacious side to my game. Even though I’m a smaller player, I am still physical.”

He is the second player from the Meijer AAA 18U team who has signed an NAHL tender this season.

A tender is a contract, of sorts, a player signs announcing his intentions to play for that particular NAHL team and that NAHL team only. Once a player signs a tender with an NAHL team, his playing rights belong to that team within the NAHL and he may not be recruited by any other NAHL team. Each team is granted ten (10) tenders, which include two (2) tenders exclusively used on players from the NAPHL - plus or minus any trades - which became active on Nov. 1. Tendered players are not eligible for the NAHL draft, which will be held on June 4, 2019.
