Rocky Mountain 16U defenseman Mitchell signs WHL agreement

November 6, 2018
The Rocky Mountain RoughRiders of the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL) are excited to announce that 16U defenseman Makai Mitchell has signed a standard Western Hockey League (WHL) Player Agreement with the Regina Pats Hockey Club.

Mitchell (6’1/192) was listed by the Pats during the 2017-18 season and attended his first training camp in Regina this past August.

“We are really excited about this signing,” said Pats General Manager John Paddock. “Makai was very impressive at training camp and we couldn’t be happier that he chose the WHL and the Regina Pats.”

Mitchell is in his second season playing in the NAPHL for the RoughRiders. So far during the 2018-19 season, he has two points in seven NAPHL games played for the 16U RoughRiders, who are in 2nd place in the High Performance Division.

During the 2017-18 season, he recorded seven points in 17 games played and was selected to and played in the 2018 NAPHL 16U All-Star Game.

"Makai is a perfect example for players that don't get drafted at the age of 14.  Four of Makai's 14U teammates were drafted in the WHL two years ago.  Makai is a big kid and his body wasn't ready at 14.  Two years later, he is drafted in the USHL and signs a contract with the WHL.  He was patient and put in the work, " said RoughRiders 14U Head Coach Matt Huckins.
