California 16U duo first to sign 2013-14 NAHL tenders

The California Titans, proud members of the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL), are pleased to announce that two members of the 16U team have signed tenders to play in the NAHL. Forwards Cody Key and Jared Turcotte have both signed tenders to play for the NAHL’s Bismarck Bobcats. Bismarck was one of the many teams in attendance that were scouting at the most recent NAPHL event in San Jose.
Key, 16, is coming off a memorable event in San Jose and offensively there was no one better. The 6’0/160 native Fresno, California, had an event to remember as he racked up 15 points (7 goals, 8 assists) in just five games. Key’s 23 points to date not only leads the Titans 16U team in scoring, but the entire NAPHL as well.
“Cody has taken on a leadership role since the beginning of the season,” said Titans coach Luc Beausoleil. “Last year, he was overshadowed a bit because we had a lot of talent, but this year he has proven he is that top-level guy. His work ethic on and off the ice has been outstanding and he is focused on developing into a premier level junior hockey player one day.”
Turcotte, 16, is in his second year with the Titans 16U organization and also performed well in San Jose. The Moorpark, California native registered at least a point in all five games played and totaled eight points in that stretch. Turcotte (5’9/155) has 15 points in 10 NAPHL games played so far this season. Last season as a 15-year-old, Turcotte had 14 points in 21 NAPHL games played.
Key and Turcotte are the first two NAPHL players signed to NAHL tenders during the 2013-14 season. The NAHL tender signing period began on November 1st.
A tender is a contract, of sorts, a player signs announcing his intentions to play for that particular NAHL team and that NAHL team only. Once a player signs a tender with an NAHL team, his playing rights belong to that team within the NAHL and he may not be recruited by any other NAHL team. Each team is granted ten (10) tenders, which include two (2) tenders exclusively used on players from the NAPHL - plus or minus any trades - which become active on Nov. 1. Tendered players are not eligible for the NAHL draft, which will be held on June 3, 2014.
