PHL Championship games set for Monday

February 19, 2012

An exciting Day 3 of the PHL Championship Series wrapped-up at the Troy Sports Center on Sunday and the finalists for the Championship Games in all three of the PHL Divisions has been set.

18U Gold Division
The 18U Gold Division final is set and will feature and #1 seed Pittsburgh Viper Stars against the #3 seed California Titans.  Pittsburgh advanced thanks to a thrilling 4-3 shootout win over the Detroit Falcons.  Luke Leya played the role of hero, scoring the game-tying goal late in the 3rd period and the shootout winning goal to send the Viper Stars to the Championship game.  In the other semi-final, California scored two goals in the 3rd period from Yanick Lacombe and Brandon Anderson to defeat in-state rival Orange County Hockey Club, 3-2.  California previously won the PHL Championship back in 2010, while Pittsburgh, who won the regular season, is gunning for their first title.  The 18U Championship game is set for 8:15am (eastern).

18U Silver Division
In the consolation bracket, the Indiana Jr. Ice will face the Pursuit of Excellence in the Consolation Championship.  The two teams faced one another in the round-robin on Sunday, with Indiana winning a thrilling game in a shootout, 4-3.

16U Gold Division
The 16U Gold Division Championship game is set and features the #2 seed Indiana Jr. Ice against the upstart and #8 seed Texas Tornado.  Indiana advanced to the Championship game thanks to a 4-1 win over the New Jersey Jr. Titans.  Drew Doyton and Joseph Chitwood each had three points and Chase Monroe made 40 saves.  In the other semi-final, the Texas Tornado faced the heavily favored Omaha AAA Lancers.   The Tornado never led in regulation, but did manage to come back from a two goal deficit in the 3rd period to tie the game at 3-3 and send the game to a shootout.   In the shootout, Ryan Poole scored the lone goal and Tornado goaltender Jay Harrington stopped all Omaha shooters as Texas stunned Omaha to advance to the title game against Indiana on Monday at 10:00am (eastern).

16U Silver Division
The St. Louis Selects defeated the Pursuit of Excellence 6-1 on Sunday to finish with a 3-0-1 record and seven points and advance to the Consolation Championship where they will face the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes who advanced in a three-way tie-breaker over Lansing and California.

14U Division
Despite some round-robin games still being played on Monday morning, the 14U Championship game is set and will feature the San Jose Jr. Sharks and the St. Louis Selects, who both have enough points to finish in the top two spots in the standings.  St. Louis won both their games on Sunday, defeating Texas 10-2 and West Michigan 6-3.  San Jose won a thrilling game over California 5-4 to advance to the title game.  If San Jose wins their morning game on Sunday against West Michigan, they will finish as the number #1 seed and be the home team for the Championship game.  Regardless, the San Jose vs. St. Louis Championship game will be held on Monday at 12:15pm (eastern).
