San Jose 18U goalie Cooley signs NAHL tender

November 11, 2014
The San Jose Jr. Sharks, proud members of the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL) are pleased to announce that 18U goalie Devin Cooley has signed an NAHL tender agreement with the Springfield Jr. Blues. The Jr. Blues compete in the NAHL’s North Division and are coached by former San Jose Jr. Sharks coach Tony Zasowski.

Cooley, 17, is in his third season playing in the NAPHL for the Jr. Sharks. The native of Los Gatos, California is having his best season to date as he has posted a 3-1-2 record with a 1.00 goals against average and a 96.0% save percentage.  His goals against average and save percentage both rank 2nd in the NAPHL 18U Division.

Cooley (6’4/170) has been named as a star in both Apex Peak Performers Stars of the Month this season. In September, he was named as the #2 star for goalies from the event in Blaine. In October, he was named the #3 star for goalies from the event in Romeoville.

Cooley has not allowed more than two goals in a game this season, and that happened only once to date. He also has one shutout to his credit, which came in the first game of the season. Since that point, he has gone four straight NAPHL games in which he has allowed just one goal in each game.

During the 2011-12 season, Cooley played for Coach Zasowski on the San Jose Bantam team and last season he played for the San Jose 16U team.

“We are excited to keep up our pipeline with the San Jose Jr. Sharks. I worked with Devin during my five years with the Jr. Sharks and have been tracking him since I came to Springfield,” said Jr. Blues head coach Tony Zasowski. “When I watched the Jr. Sharks in Blaine and Chicago at the NAPHL events, it was clear that Devin is ready for the next step.”

Cooley will become the third former Jr. Sharks goalie to play for the Jr. Blues following in the footsteps of Ryan Kellenberger (Tufts/NCAA DIII) and Niko Dellamaggorie.

A tender is a contract, of sorts, a player signs announcing his intentions to play for that particular NAHL team and that NAHL team only. Once a player signs a tender with an NAHL team, his playing rights belong to that team within the NAHL and he may not be recruited by any other NAHL team. Each team is granted ten (10) tenders, which include two (2) tenders exclusively used on players from the NAPHL - plus or minus any trades - which become active on Nov. 1. Tendered players are not eligible for the NAHL draft, which will be held in June of 2015.
